AVI’s SuperFoods Promotional Series Inspires Youth
AVI Foodsystems is excited to serve students from kindergarten through college! For the young children, we introduced our SuperFoods series for the 2018-2019 school year, spotlighting awesome and nutritious foods.
Throughout the year, students are presented with six groups of SuperFoods, foods that fuel the body and contribute to a wholesome, balanced diet. Marketing materials describe the benefits of featured SuperFoods, which range from purple produce, red fruits and green vegetables to squash, grains and beans. These nutritious ingredients are introduced across the menu in many different formats. New pizzas, power bowls and the produce bar feature the SuperFoods.
The program is a culmination of AVI’s culinary, marketing and operations teams to develop effective recipes to engage students.
School mascots often join the AVI team in samplings and café events, boosting student interest with a bright green SuperFoods cape as they share new foods, such as pepitas (hulless pumpkin seeds), with students.
“Students get really excited when they see the bulldog,” commented Adam Hale, AVI’s Resident Director at Lakeview Local Schools in Cortland, Ohio. “It shifts the paradigm when students approach new foods. Trying something new is presented in an environment of excitement and the positive buzz around the mascot brings more students to sample and try these SuperFoods we’re serving.”
“The most common question we had from students was ‘What is a pepita’?” noted Jennifer Currey, District Manager for AVI, describing student reactions to the dining service’s recent Super Squash promotion. “The culinary team has really run with this new ingredient in our dishes, serving everything from seasoned pepitas to Butternut Squash and a new Pepita & Feta Salad. The excitement our team shows toward the program is mirrored in the students’ receptiveness to the new selections.”
As part of each promotion, students are given a take-home recipe card featuring one of AVI’s kid-friendly selections. On the reverse of the card, students find a fun and engaging activity utilizing a featured SuperFood such as a science experiment or word puzzle, rounding out their SuperFoods experience.
